Description
Brilliant flame-orange scales cover the wings of a Julia Longwing butterfly. A clear message is sent to potential predators, "I'm bright because I'm toxic!" but it's a lie.
Batesian mimicry spares many species from being eaten. Although harmless, they look like their toxic cousins.
Dryas iulia (commonly called Julia Longwing) is a species of brush-footed butterfly. The sole representative of its genus Dryas, it is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska.
