Description
An old oak, gnarled and twisted, stands alone on a grassy central California hillside. Coast Live oaks (Quercus agrifolia) slowly grow up to 80 feet tall for 200 to 300 years.
Only the skeleton of this tree remains. A plant pathogen pandemic (Phytophthora ramorum) has already taken the lives of millions of oaks, and other trees, in the western United States and billions more around the globe.
