Description
First dividing and then uniting San Francisco, Market Street has a glorious history.
When the 1847 proposal to build an abnormally wide boulevard, which would cut diagonally through the heart of the city was offered, it wasn’t popular. Indeed, the planner barely escaped with his life. Over time, feelings changed, and the street became San Francisco’s main artery.
When it was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, it was dubbed the “Path of Gold” due to the installation of unique sculptures and many architectural masterpieces. Over the next century skyscrapers would line the street but always framing the 1898 gateway to the city, the iconic, historic Ferry Building.
