Description
Rhodochrosite is a manganese mineral (MnCO3) which appears raspberry red with pink stripes in natural light. But place a light behind it, and it's easy to see why the Incas believed rhodochrosite was the fossilized blood of their ancestral Kings and Queens.
I admired this sliced stone in the mineral hall at the Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, where this magnificent piece was displayed front and backlit. (See my Crystals & Minerals & Rocks collection to view the front-lighted image.)
