Description
Living throughout the trees of tropical jungles on the Island nation of Madagascar, the Crested Coua (Coua cristata) forages. It's an inquisitive bird that bounces or hops through the trees, but rarely flies.
The Crested Coua is shy, often solitary or with a mate, but as the sun descends a melodious twilight chorus begins as Crested Couas connect "verbally" with one another. They have several different calls but the most frequent and distinctive is a “laser gun” call; a series of piercing, descending calls which reverberate through the jungle canopy.
Crested Couas, like this one, are popular zoo birds - easy to keep, colorful and their native populations are classified under Least Concern.
