Description
In a heartbeat, thousands of birds take flight. Brilliant flashes of white with black tips flood the skies where the roar of beating wings mixes with a hundred honks. It's an amazing experience when so many Ross's geese spontaneously lift into the air, arching through the sky to sweep back directly over you. Gliding over a field, they lower and land with grace. Perfection!
Small white geese with black wingtips, a Ross's goose is like a miniature version of the more abundant Snow goose. Although it breeds in the central Arctic, it winters primarily in central California where I photographed these birds at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge.
A flock of birds is captured in mid-flight against a clear sky, with their wings spread out in various positions. The large number of birds creates a sense of movement and freedom as they navigate through the air.
