Description
#872 is a young male California Condor. He hatched on April 20, 2017 at the Peregrine Fund, World Center for Birds of Prey in Boise, Idaho, USA. This healthy boy was transferred to the Santa Barbara Zoo in California during the COVID-19 Pandemic since the center had reduced field workers available to care for the condor.
#872 is starting to turn pink, typical of condors ages 3-5 years old. He will have mottled pink and black visage until he reaches full maturity at about 7 years old. Then his head will remain a vibrant pink and orange color for the remainder of his 60+ year life.
California condors are well known for their impressive 9.5 feet wingspan. They were also the first species to be listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1967. But what I really like about them is that they are very social and form strong bonds with each other. They often play, preen each other, and happily investigate anything new with their buddies.
