Description
Moving forward, each step slow and deliberate, the elegant Great Egret makes it's way through the swampfire of Morro Bay National Estuary, California.
The pure white plumage of the Great Egret (Ardea alba) stands out against most backgrounds but if you are a little fish, frog or salamander looking up through murky marsh water, the white blends perfectly with the overcast sky.
The red plant is pickleweed (Salicornia subterminalis) sometimes called Pacific swampfire, glasswort, or saltwort. It's a low growing succulent that dominates the lower salt marshland of the estuary. In summer it's bright green, in autumn or winter, it turns red.
