Description
A ranger shines his light upon a stalagmite during a tour at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico.
Carlsbad Cavern is located in limestone which was deposited in an ancient sea about 230 million years ago. Every passage in the cave is formed along a fracture. In many places the fractures in the limestone are very complex and formed an intricate maze of passages. Over time the cavern became the highly decorated show piece of nature we know today.
