Description
The world famous playwright William Shakespeare was born “Gulielmus filius Johannes Shakspere” (which is Latin for William son of John Shakspere) on the 26th of April 1564. Over the years, his surname has been spelled many different ways. The spelling, “William Shakespeare” was established in the 20th century.
Little is known about his childhood but he became an actor in 1596. He wisely invested in property and became part-owner of the Globe Theatre by 1599. He penned many plays between 1590 and 1612, some of which were discovered only after his death on the 25th of April 1616.
If you visit the 6th floor of the La Trobe Reading Room in the State Library Victoria in Melbourne, Australia you may see many wonders displayed. Among these treasures is a stained-glass window commissioned in July 1862 of William Shakspere.
(A vibrant stained glass window depicts William Shakespeare holding a scroll. Intricate floral and geometric designs surround the figure.)
