An expert flyer, the Red Flame Dragonfly is fast, agile and capable of hovering as well as making exceptionally quick directional changes. Like a skilled WWI fighter pilot, the Red Flame streaks through the air toward his chosen prey, successfully downing its target.
These amazing insects are a critical benefit to the environment and to humankind. Flame skimmer nymphs feed on mosquito larvae, aquatic fly larvae and mayfly larvae. They may also dine on shrimp, small fish and tadpoles. Adult skimmers feed on moths, flies, ants and other soft-bodied insects. They are found in the western United States near bodies of water.
