Description
One touch and it disintegrates.
That’s one of the many reasons why it was so difficult to culture Leucothea pulchra (Latin for “Beautiful Sea Goddess”) at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. These graceful, translucent creatures are mesmerizing. Most of their flashing colors are a result of light diffraction but they are bioluminescent as well.
Spotted Comb jellies grow blazingly fast; from the size of a speck of dust to four inches, which is half their adult size, in eight weeks.
As amazingly delicate as they are, these beauties are the apex predators of the tiny world of plankton. They feast on worms, krill, shrimp, larval fish and other tiny jellies.
They can be found from Baja California to British Columbia.
A delicate, translucent marine creature floats against a deep blue background, with bioluminescent lines and red dots adorning its elongated shape. The ethereal light within gives the creature a ghostly, mesmerizing appearance.
