Description
These boys are play-battling, preparing for the day when they can successfully chase off intruders and hold onto a harem. By the size of their infamous schnozes, these Northern Elephant Seals are between three to five years old.
Northern elephant seals were once thought to be extinct due to heavy commercial sealing in the 1800s. But a small population of only a hundred individuals, survived in Mexico. It's believed that all northern elephant seals come from those Mexican hideouts. Their population began to steadily increase in the early 1900s. Now are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and have a population estimated at 150,000 individuals.
