Description
With a distinctive curled black plume in front of his face, a male California Quail rests at the Sweet Spring Nature Preserve in Los Osos, California.
The California Quail (Callipepla californica) is a handsome, round bird with a rich gray breast, intricately scaled underside, and a reputation for being delicious. Although they spend most of their time on the ground, I've seen males fly up into trees to call out for mates.

KJ – I wanted to let you know that your stunning image was a top thirty-five candidate from 57 initial considerations for selection as the October 2025 "Photo of the Month" in the Go Take a Hike Photography Group. Even though not advancing as a finalist, this image is most worthy of recognition as a superb photographic effort, so congratulations and well done! Please feel free to add this gem to the “Candidates for Photo of the Month” discussion thread in the group.
