Description
The striking elongated black spots on a field of orange fur is a surprisingly effective camouflage for this native African cat. The Serval prowls the grasslands south of the Sahara. Their beautiful markings help to make them the most successful hunters of the cat world.
Servals successfully catch half the critters they hunt, while most cats only catch about 10% of the animals they try for. They also have the longest legs and largest ears of any in the cat family. Servals are so fast, when they surprise a flock, they can take down as many as five birds during a single leap.
In recent times, they have become a popular exotic pet but there are many difficulties to keeping a wild cat. Servals need a large natural environment to thrive. They hunt at night and heavily mark their territory. They play hard, jump extremely high and chew anything - including owners and other pets.
