Description
Constructed over 250 years (from 1539 to 1790) the Spanish built a formidable 6-level fortress facing the Atlantic Ocean. Over 2 centuries later, Castillo San Felipe del Morro remains an impressive sentinel at the entrance to the Bay of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
After the Spanish-American war, the U.S.A. used Castillo San Felipe del Morro as a look out for marine and air attacks during both World Wars. Later, two-thirds of the island was used extensively by the US Navy for bombing and military training. After the accidental death of a civilian, the area was abandoned as a Navy base in 1961. Today it is governed by the National Park Service and in 1983, El Morro and the walled city of Old San Juan were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sties.
