Description
Snatching food from the water's surface, carnivorous predators glide through the roots of a mangrove cluster in tropical jungle rivers.
Arapaima are primitive fish which grow up to 3-meters in length. They are native to the warm waters of South America's Amazon Basin. These very unusual fish breathe air, making them easy prey for hunters with spears. They are reputed to be delicious and are now listed as endangered in the wild.
This one lives a life of luxury in the 100,000-gallon Amazon Rainforest tank at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco.
