Description
Eating pollen is no easy feat. It’s a fascinating case of co-evolution. The Tiger Longwing has developed a symbiotic relationship with flowering gourd plants. Both thrive in the warm climates of Central and South America.
These gorgeous insects, like this male Tiger or Isabella’s Longwing, mix their saliva with pollen until it releases amino acids. The plant protein can then be drawn up the proboscis (butterfly tongue) to give this remarkably intelligent species a much longer life-span than its cousins.
A delicate butterfly with orange and black wings is perched on a green leaf. Its curled proboscis and intricate wing patterns are clearly visible against the natural background.
