Description
So beautiful and so precious, butterflies have become the environmental heroes of the twenty-first century.
Thousands of Blue Morpho butterflies and other beautiful insect species are transported to museums, conservatories, classrooms and private displays around the world. What keeps them from going extinct? Butterfly farms. Insect farming is replacing destructive agricultural practices giving rural populations a new way of earning income and a reason to preserve their rainforests. Since butterfly farming is dependent upon native plant species, a butterfly farmer must keep areas of land intact to provide food sources for their caterpillars. Plus, many farms will not harm or kill their insects, allowing them to expire from natural causes before collecting and selling them.
Butterflies from Central and South America, Central Africa, Madagascar, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, China and Australia are farmed, indirectly protecting their natural habitats.
