Description
Walking along the edge of the road, I surprised a North American Porcupine as it forged through the thick foliage. For a moment, we considered each other, then a blur of quills scurried up a tree with greater speed and agility than I ever would have guessed. It uses it's bristle-like hairs on the underside of its tail to aid it when scaling trees. It paused to peek at me, to see if I would follow - and I snapped the shutter.
This wild porcupine lives in the Skilak Wildlife Recreation area which is part of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge consists of nearly two-million acres of the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage, Alaska so I consider myself lucky to have had this chance encounter.
