The beautiful orange, red, black and gold landscape of the Painted Hills unit, becomes especially vibrant when the sun hangs low in the sky.
The geometrically-striped hills are made of sedimentary layers which are sequentially deposited. (Typically the oldest layers are on the bottom, though there are exceptions.) The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day National Monument in centrally located in Oregon, USA.
