Dark-red swirls surround a deep, steaming pool under bright blue Wyoming skies.

Usually, Opal Pool in Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, has a bright blue center surrounded by with an orange bacterial mat. But in September of 2019, it was dark and foreboding, quietly simmering as the Firehole River gently flowed nearby.
