Black Opal Pool was named long before Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park experienced powerful, dramatic hydrothermal explosions in 1934. The geothermal activity created new features and transformed existing pools in color and shape. Now, a heavenly-blue hot spring near the Firehole river attracts visitors from around the world who wonder why it's called Black Opal Pool.
