Description
White feathers in winter, brown during summer with a mix of the two in Spring and Autumn. In the tundra, bogs and moorlands in the far north, camouflage aids survival.
Willow ptarmigans cluck and chuckle in Northern Canada and Alaska. Feathers cover its feet to keep scaly-toes warm and act like ‘showshoes’ allowing these birds to easily walk over snow drifts.
This Willow Ptarmigan wisely makes his home in Denali National Park where he is protected from those who have placed his cousins in souvenir shops throughout Alaska.
A white and brown bird with red eyes is perched on the top of a bare branch with a few green leaves sprouting. The background appears to be a blurred landscape with patches of snow, suggesting a cold environment.
