Description
The carnivorous Northern Sea Nettle injects venom into it's prey to paralyze it's victim and begin digesting it's meal as it's being carried toward the nettle's mouth. Once prey arrives at the jelly's mouth, the hapless victim enters an oral cavity lined with fibrous vessels used to break prey apart, aiding the jelly's digestion.
The Northern Sea Nettle enjoys the cold Bering sea and drifts between the Aleutian islands of Alaska, down toward Northern Japan. There, ancient ninja warriors reportedly used to scatter dried venom from this species into the wind to irritate the nose and eyes of their enemies during battle.
The Northern Sea Nettle or Chrysaora melanaster has several common names including Pacific Sea Nettle, Red-stripped jelly, Brown jelly and Black Star jelly.
