Description
At over 30 pounds and a meter long, this powerful fish swims upstream to mate, lay eggs and perish. Chinook burst through the water’s surface to climb to their special birthing pool.
I photographed this one swimming between Oregon and Washington states (USA) up the Columbia River.
Chinook, also known as blackmouth, magnum, spring and king salmon, listed as Threatened while other salmon populations are Endangered. NOAA Fisheries, in cooperation with federal, state, tribal and Canadian officials, manage the State fish of Alaska's population for commercial, recreational and tribal harvest.
