Description
Nesting in the earth is a great way to stay cool and hide from predators. A hole makes an awesome launch point to ambush prey.
Burrowing owls often nest and roost in the burrows made by ground squirrels. Being a wise owl, when this bird is threatened, it retreats into its burrow and produces rattling and hissing sounds similar to those of a rattlesnake. Since rattlesnakes also inhabit ground squirrel burrows, the Burrowing Owl hopes this fools any predator from entering their home.
Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) thrive from Canada to Argentina, excepting Central America and the Amazon.
A Burrowing Owl is perched within its ground-level habitat, surrounded by green grass and cacti. Its piercing yellow eyes gaze forward, and its brown and white plumage blend well with the natural surroundings.
