Description
If you are naive enough to lean against a cecropia, thousands of ants will rush out of holes in the trunk to vigorously protect the tree. One soon realizes that touching, leaning against or any other activity near a cecropia can be met with a very unpleasant experience. I was walking through the Millet Bird Sanctuary on the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia when I saw this striking white leaf upside-down on the path. I took the photo and quickly moved on.
Cecropia trees are common in the lowland rainforests of the neotropics; Caribbean islands, Central and South America. They are delicious to many insects so they have developed a few defenses and powerful allies.
