Artist's Description

Why is this sweet-sounding song-bird endangered?

Estimated at fewer than 4,000 individuals, this slender, long-winged passerine measures about 7 inches long. Tiny black feather tufts of the Streaked Horned Lark create the distinctive "horns" displayed by the males.

Ground nesting has made these sweet tenors vulnerable to pets, wild predators, and agricultural activity. This sensitive species is also known to decline due to airport activity, dredged material dumping, recreation and from military operations.

Now extinct in British Columbia, Canada, the Streaked Horned Lark (Eremophila alpestris strigata) has several northwestern states actively seeking ways to save the endangered songbird. One recent proposal by the US Fish and Wildlife Service estimates costs between $23 million and $81 million, with a time estimate 25 years or longer to restore this native lark species to a healthy population.
