Description
At dusk, a small shorebird wades in the flooded areas of the Merced National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a frequent winter visitor to central California’s shallow mud-flats. The entire flock revitalizes on abundant snails, shrimp, crayfish, flies, and fish. Then the journey of the Black-necked Stilt continues as they make their way down from Cailfornia to Costa Rica.
This water loving bird is found throughout the Americas, from Canada to Southern Chile.
(A bird is silhouetted against a vibrant orange sunset, wading through calm waters. Its reflection creates a striking mirrored effect.)
