Artist's Description

Saved from extinction in record time, it took only 15 years of sustainable management practices to bring Canary Rockfish populations back to “rebuilt” status. (This means the population of the fish increased to a level above what is needed to sustain a healthy population.)

Under the initial rebuilding plan beginning in the year 2000, populations of the bright orange and pink Canaries were not expected to be rebuilt until 2057. Instead, numbers grew six-fold. This rapid progress which was attributed to a combination of favorable ocean conditions and strict conservation measures, was a welcome surprise. This is particularly good news because slow-growing, late to mature, long-lived species, like the Canary Rockfish, don’t always recover.

(A vibrant orange and white fish is captured in sharp detail against a dark background. Its scales reflect light, emphasizing its bold pattern and large, expressive eye.)
