Description
In 1990, a new species was discovered and named Stella. (Stellamedusa ventana) This creature is not uncommon; it just tends to thrive anywhere from 650 to 2600 feet in cold, black waters.
After sighting Stella in an ROV camera, scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute were intrigued. They gathered and studied this new, blue jelly and discovered that each of Stella’s bumps contains hundreds of stinging cells used for capturing and holding prey.
Stellamedusa ventana can usually be seen off the coast of California 200 to 800 meters down, or at an aquarium.
