Description
The world’s rarest cat endures the harsh environments of eastern Russia, Northern China, and the Korean Peninsula. Although the Manchurian Leopard is stealthy, this has not prevented this spotted cat from becoming critically endangered. Their pelts are prized and so is their habitat.
The Manchurian Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is also called the Amur leopard, Korean leopard and the Far East leopard. These amazing cats can run up to 37 mph and leap more than 19 feet horizontally and 10 feet vertically yet weigh less than 100 pounds.
Fortunately, in 2012, Russia and China established a new refuge and populations in the “Land of the Leopard National Park” are slowly growing. Zoos which successfully breed the Amur Leopard may play a critical part in restocking wild populations of the future.
