Description
With a head the shape of a ballpoint pen, this small shark is an aggressive predator with sharp, venomous spines in front of each dorsal fin. They successfully hunt in packs, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of thousands. They eat almost anything, even fish twice their size and they travel thousands of miles in search of a meal.
Females mature at 25-35 years old, males at 19 anticipating a lifespan equivalent to humans, about 80 to 100 years. She’ll give birth to 9 inch-long pups in a shallow bay.
Plentiful populations of Pacific Spiny Dogfish (Squalus suckleyi) are found off the coast of California, USA.
