Description
It's an amazing engineering achievement to build a set of turbojet engines capable of powering the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart (a top-secret spy plane capable of high-altitude, Mach 3+ reconnaissance built for the United States Central Intelligence Agency by Lockheed's Skunk Works), the Lockheed M-21 (spy-plane with drone), the YF-12 Interceptor (an American experimental fighter-interceptor), the SR-71 Blackbird (long-range, high-altitude, Mach3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft used by the US Military and NASA) and the SR-71 trainer aircraft.
The Pratt & Whitney J58 (jT11D-20) Turbojet engines will accelerate a Blackbird to speeds over three times sound, at an altitude of 85,000 feet while burning over 133 gallons of fuel per minute - an extraordinarily fast but expensive machine to fly.
