Description
King salmon will climb, struggle and dodge threats hoping to mate in the cool, clean pools where they hatched. Leaving their eggs behind, these amazing fish complete their natural lifecycle. Their bodies enrich the stream that once carried them out to sea.
My camera captured these two Chinooks as they took a moment to rest before ascending the Bonneville Lock and Dam's fish ladders not far from the mouth of the Columbia River. They are known by many names, King salmon or Blackmouth, Magnum or Spring salmon but whatever they are called, they are the largest species of salmon.
These 2 Chinook, who swim in the lower Columbia River bordering both American states of Oregon and Washington, are currently listed as Threatened while other salmon populations are Endangered. NOAA Fisheries, in cooperation with federal, state, tribal and Canadian officials, manage the State fish of Alaska's population for commercial, recreational and tribal harvest.
